Part of an old residential complex originally built for foreign workers in the ’80s, the client’s intent was to transform his villa into a guesthouse. Owning a house with a small garden is a rare opportunity in a city like Shenzhen. Then, we decided to preserve this western aesthetic and strengthen the relationship with its surrounded nature. Most of its inner bearing walls and facades were kept intact.

The extension done within the perimeter of the existing house is built with sand-bricks to match with this original granite stone. However, the extension brought outside of the existing perimeter is expressed by wide-opened white boxes. This contrast in materials allowed us to keep the authenticity of the villa while giving a contemporary hint to it. The heaviness of the bricks, the lightness of the glass windows and the green belt around the house give to each visitors a sense of
“home away from home”.
